Project aims:

  • To advance scholarly understanding of the nature and value of epistemic autonomy and its relation to intellectual humility
  • To create a valid and reliable way to measure the trait of epistemic autonomy
  • To increase public understanding of how epistemic autonomy and intellectual humility can help individuals navigate contentious public debates

Key concepts:

  • Epistemic autonomy is the intellectual virtue of appropriately relying upon oneself in one’s reasoning, judgment, and decision making.
  • Intellectual humility is the awareness of the fallibility and limitations of one’s reasoning, beliefs, and cognitive abilities.
